Temuka Caledonian Society.

The Temuka Caledonian Society held their first “ Ingleside ” gathering on Tuesday evening in the Volunteer Drill Shed. The shed was tastefully decorated with flags, evergreens, etc., and the floor was in first-class order for dancing. The amusements.consisted of dancing and songs, with intervals for conversation and instrumental mnsic. The attendance was large, between 200 and 300 persons being present. About 8 o’clock Mr A. M. Clark, the president, ascended the stage, and having welcomed those present, expressed a hope that they would thoroughly enjoy themselves, and that they would meet on many similar occasions in the future. At a convenient opportunity after supper, the president presented the trophies won at the Boxing Day sporl s. Tn the course of his remarks he thanked the directors and working committee for their exertions, to which the success of the gathering was due. The prizes consisted of a cairngorm handsomely mounted as a brooch, won by Mr James Campbell, for pipe music ; a cub glass inkstand, silver mounted, the gift of Messrs Or. and T. Young, for Highland dancing ; and a brooch in the form of a dagger, given by Messrs Bower and Ferguson, also for Highland dancing. There having been a tie for these events, and the winners having accepted money prizes, the trophies would be competed for at another gathering. Dancing was resumed and kept up till 2 o’clock when the president thanked the committee for the excellence of their arrangements, and all present joined in singing “ Auld Lang Syne.” In the course of the evening songs were contributed by Mr Foster, the Misses Connolly and McLeod, and Messrs Smith, and McCaskill. Mr Lawson recited part of “ Tam o’ Shanter,” and Mr f'im gave a comic Scotch reading. Mrs Foster (piano) and Messrs Langridge (violin), Eayner (flute), and J. Andrews (clarionet), played “My Dream ” waltz in excellent style. The general dance music was provided by Messrs Levens and Goodwillie, apd the society’s piper, Mr Campbell, played several reels and schottisches with great spirit. Messrs Quinn, Allan, Henry Mogridge, and Lawson, acted as stewards, and Mr A. Bisset as M.C. Ample refreshments were provided by Messrs Allan, Clark, Murray, Md eod, and Naughton. Mesdames Allan and' McLeod, with several assistants, presided. A smoking and card room was prepared for those who preferred that form of amusement, and everything was done that could add to the general enjoyment of the evening.'
