AUCKLAND, May 2 ,

An enquiry has just been concluded into a borough scandal, and the city treasurer has resigned. It is alleged that in letting allotments at the Waikomiti cemetery he neglected to mark off those taken on the plan, and the result was confusion. It is said that the disinterment of eight bodies took place without the consent of the Colonial Secretary being granted. The City Council passed a resolution to-night, expressing admiration at the bravery and humanity of the Samoans during the recent disaster at Apia. A copy of the resolution is to be sent to Mataafa.

The Auckland Rugby Union have decided that two matches shall be played with the Maori footballers on their return to Auckland, probably in July. The City Council have decided to apply for the revocation of the Order in Council, declaring this city under the provisions of the Public Bodies Powers Act.

GREYMOUTH, May 2.

At Brunnerton this morning Inspector Emerson and Mr Wood, Collector of Customs, and tho local police, -made a seizure at Malacbi Taylor’s brewery of a quantity of spirits and stilling implements. Taylor was arrested. He is a well-known brewer and an old resident in this district.

DUNEDIN, May 2,

The oldest lodge in this district, tho Otago Lodge, E.C., passed a unanimous resolution last night that it is desirable that a Grand Lodge for New Zealand be constituted, and appointed Messrs William DeEenzy, Fitehett, Barth, Eonaldson, and McGregor, aa delegates to the convention in Wellington during the next session of Parliament to arrange the basis of union, proclaim the Grand Lodge, and elect the first Grand Master.

No trace has been found of the body of the fisherman who was drowned in the harbour yesterday.

INVERCARGILL, May 2.

Mr Douglas, the station master at Riversdale, who was run down by a waggon some weeks back, his foot having caugbt in the frog of the crossing while shunting, died this afternoon in the hospital. His recovery was not at any time hoped for by the medical staff, but he stood the amputation of his leg better than was anticipated. . The immediate cause of death was pneumonia, Mr Douglas was a young man, and leaves a widow and two children.
