; It is reported here that ex-King Milan [ will enter a monastery at Jerusalem in i order to qualify himself for election to'the i position of Patriarch of Sorvia. He is ' trying to induce Theodosius, Metropolitan ■ Archbishop of Scrvia, who officially ' annulled the marriago of Milan and Natalie, under pressure from King Milan, to reconsider his intention of resigning. In the event of the resignation of Theodosius, the Regent’s Ministry favour ; the restoration of Michael—one of the i Bishops expelled by ex-King Milan for refusing to agree to pronounce him ! divorced. LORD SALISBURY AT BRISTOL, London, April 2-4. 1 In the course of his speeoch at Bristol, the Marquis of Salisbury said that only the grave necessity for protecing the enormous fabric of England’s industry induced the prosecuting of the naval scheme recently submitted to the House of Commons by Lord George Hamilton, First Lord of the Admiralty. While England was on most friendly terms with every nation at present, the peaceful aspect might change with the suddenness of a summer shower, and though the only menace to England from the Continent was that part of the coast extending from the River Byder, in Holstein, to the River Loire, in France. Referring to Irish affairs, the Premier said that the separatist policy compelled England to watch Ireland with the same care as the Continent. The Government must increase the number of owners of land in Ireland before granting local government, which in any case must contain no germ of Home Rule, or anything which might be used as a leverage to obtain Home Rule. The last hope for Irish progress was a long spell of administration under impartial laws. (Received 8 p.m., April 2oth.) THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH. The fever from which the Duke of Edinburgh is suffering is unabated, and his condition is considered critical. Her Majesty the Queen is much alarmed. COLONIAL SECURITIES TRUST. A Colonial Securities Trust, with a capital of £1,000,000 is being formed. THE MIDLAND RAILWAY. Sir Arthur Blythe, Agent-General of South Australia, and Sir Charles Tupper, Agent-General for Canada, have been invited to become New Zealand trustees of the Midland Railway Company’s debentures. COMMERCIAL The wool sales re-opened to-day with prices very firm. There was a large attendance of buyers and keen competition. The present series will close on May I 4th. The quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 3,800,000 quarters, and for the Continent 320,000. The American visible supply is 27,000,000 bushels. MR JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN. Mr Chamberlain, in a speech at the Liberal-Unionist Conference, lauded the Irish policy of the Government, which, ho said, had been the cause of reducing crime in Ireland, and had also secured the return of peace and order, and the fostering of industries. The policy of the Government, ho continued, was more satisfactory, liberal, democratic, and generous, than that of Mr Gladstone’s Ministry. He concluded by stating that no town council or road board would have tolerated for one week the impertinence and obstruction which the House of Commons had suffered for years. Several naval officers have been arrested for complicity in the plot against the life of the Czar. The attempt was to be made during the Easter festival, but the route taken by the Czar was suddenly changed. It was intended to havo used poisoned bomb shells. COLLIERS’ CONFERENCE. London, April 25. The conference at Nottingham represents 250,000 colliers, and has been appointed to consider the strike and an advance of 10 per cent in wages, PUGILISTIC. Charlie Mitchell has accepted Joe Thompson’s challenge to fight Slavin for £IOOO a side and the championship of England and Australia, provided he (Mitchell) is disengaged in autumn.
