South Canterbury Times. THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 1889. NEWS OF THE DAY.
The financial result of the bazaar recently held in connection with St. Saviour’s Church, Temuka, has exceeded the expectations of the promoters, the handsome sum of £BS having bean netted in the two days. A concert in aid of the school fund was held at Albury last Thursday which was a great success, being very largely attended. Visitors came from Burke’s Pass, Fairlie Creek, Sutherlands, and Pleasant Point. A dance followed the concert, which was kept up till the small hours. Everyone appeared to have enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
A most succcossful sale of work and produce was hold at Pleasant Point on Easter Monday in connection with St. Albans Church. For two or three months past the lady members of the congregation had been quietly and persistently preparing, those near the centre meeting at the parsonage on Wednesday afternoons. Valuable contributions were also received from friends at a distance. The result was such as to surprise many, who at 1 p.m., were present to hear Mr A. E. H. Rhodes, M.H.R., give an opening address. In the absence of an auctioneer, Mr Orton disposed of the live stock by Dutch auction at 4 p.m., and afterwards of the provisions, etc. One of the most attractive features of the concern was an “ art exhibition ” where the comic element had free play. The total proceeds amount to £62 which will place the church treasury in a good position.
