The shops in Timaru will not bo closed on Thursday next.

The Waikato County Council are endeavoring to establish a school of agriculture for their district, located at Hamilton.

The caretaker of the Immigration Barracks desires to thank Mr E. Bishop for his donation of a quantity of fish, Two names familiar to Timaru ears appear in the passenger list of tho Frisco boat Mariposa, outward bound—Messrs IT. S. Smithson, and Wakefield.

The north mole is being very steadily pushed out. It has now reached a length of 20£ chains, and at 4| chains further tho turn commences. A new loop line for the crossing of full and empty trucks was completed yesterday close to tho present end of the wall, so that now locomotives aro running a good distance out into the bay or three different linos,

The Timaru school committee meet at 6 p.m. this evening to wind up their year’s work in readiness for the householders’ meeting at 7 p.m. Up to 31st March last there bad been entered for exportation from New Zealand gold to tho value of over forty-five millions sterling. Last quarter’s export was £239,877 worth, about £3!*,000 more than the same quarter last year. An Aucklander whose money had burned his pockets away and left him very hot coppers, managed to get two or three drinks for tho price of one. He paid for a pint and, having drunk it, walked off with the pewter and sold it for the price of a second, and so on for a third. Then the buyer of public house plate peached. The diamond rock drill which was lately 'in use at Terawhiti goldfield} has been returned by the prospecting party to the possession of tho Mines Department, no results of any importance having accrued from its operations.

One of the scenes at the Auckland Opera House tho other evening represented a wayside inn, outside which was the sign “ Scotch meals 2d.” Scarcely had the scene disclosed itself to view, when a wag called out, “ Volunteer encampment!” The allusion to tho absurdly cheap commissariat arrangement of the camp was at once recognised and appreciated by the audience. A ripple of laughter greeted the sally, and gradually increased to a perfect roar of merriment. Last night, about eight o’clock, a small party of women going home from town towards Waimataitai wore frightened by the behaviour of a man they met near tho Whales Creek viaduct, and returned to town in a state of considerable perturbation. One of them oven fainted on reaching the top of the Melville hill, and was taken into Mrs Hilliard’s for restoration. Word was sent to the polices and an officer was at once sent down to the place. He found there tho cause of the alarm in a drunken man, who was too far overcome to be a source of serious fear to anyone in daylight, however unpleasant his conduct might be. He was locked up and dealt with by tho Resident Magistrate this morning.

The opening up of To Anau lake to tourist traffic is going on apace. Mr Prince, the electrical engineer, has applied for a 40 acre site for a hotel and ornamental grounds. Mr Prince also proposes to place an electricallypropelled vessel on the lake, and to that end has applied for the right to take water from a lagoon which would be used to drive the dynamos from which the vessel would be charged with the subtle motive power. The practicableness of this method of propulsion is now beyond question, and there is no reason, suggests the Southland Times , why electricity should not be cheaply developed from the power running to waste in every brawling burn around our lakes and applied to the propulsion of vessels. Last Sabbath afternoon a mooting of tho Sabbath School teachers was held in Cullmanntown Presbyterian Church to make a presentation to Miss .'Nellie Bilton, of a beautifully bound copy of the revised version of tho Bible, on the occasion of her leaving Timaru for a new sphere of work. The superintendent of the school,Mr McCullough, presided, and Mr Toshach made the presentation. In doing so he expressed his high appreciation of tho work she had so successfully done in tho church, and congratulated her on tho position she had secured in tho hearts of both teachers and scholars. After a few earnest words by Mr McCullough the meeting was brought to a close. Miss BUton has taken unwearying interest in the work of the Sabbath school ever since it was opened, and by her unostentatious and loving manner she has gained tho affectionate regard of all with whom she has been associated in this work, and she leaves Timaru with the hearty good wishes of all.
