CATHOLIC SCHOOL CONCERT.

Tho Catholic Boys’ schoolroom was packed full last night, the occasion being a concert in aid of the school funds. A capital programme had been prepared of the Christy Minstrel pattern,—a first part by artists of burnt cork complexion, a second of drawing room items, a third a screaming farce. The minstrel part went fairly well, Mr T. Kenny acted as Mr Johnsing, and Messrs Carey, Head, and Walley did good service in songs and “ business.” The second part comprised some good songs excellently sung. Miss Henry, a young lady from Ashburton, possessed of a good soprano yoice sang beautifully, ” The Isle that’s crowned with Shamrocks, ” and “ Killarney.” Miss Mee was in capital voice and sang “ Kate O’Shane ” and “ Apart,” very sweetly. Mr Atkinson deserved and received warm applause for his rendering of “ The Queen of the Earth,” a flee song, finely sung. Mr Gilchiist contributed “ The Young Brigade ” and “ Erin My Country,” the former, his best song, was capitally given. Mr T. J. Kennedy, always happy in Irish. comicalties, brought down the house with “ Ballihooly ” and “ Killaloe.” Owing to the length of the programme encores were forbidden, but the audience would not be denied an encore of one of Mr Kennedy’s items. A screaming farce “ The Black Lunatics ” in which nine characters were very well sustained formed the third part. The Titnaru Orchestral Societyfour violins, double bass, two clarionets and a cornet,under Mr Wood, —played the overtures, and Mrs Bennehy presided at the piano and accompanied the singers. As the expenses cannot have been great, the net proceeds of the concert will prove a good addition to the funds of the school.
