London, April 15, A man named Feros shot his sweetheart, Lily Bainford, an actress, on the Midland Railway, and then committed suicide by leaping from the carriage into the river Trent, THE LATE MARQUIS OF ELY. THE WOOL MARKET. London, April 15, Wool is firm, and prices unchanged. THE TASMANIAN LOAN. It is expected that the Tasmanian loan will be floated at 11 to 2 per cent premium. A LARGE FAILURE. The official receiver in the estate of Spalding and Hodge, paper merchants, estimates the liabilities at £436,000; secured creditors, £73,000; assets, 157,000. Heavy losses were occasioned by shipments of paper to Australia, £21,000 being written off on that account prior to the suspension of business. THE IMPERIAL BUDGET. Mr Goschen, Chancellor of the Exchequer. delivered his financial statement in the House of Commons to-night. Ho makes new demands for the coming year to the extent of £4,500,000, comprising local taxation and increases in the Army and Navy estimates. The expenditure last year was £941,000 below the estimate, and the revenue £1,645,000 above. The estimated expenditure for next year is £86,967,000, and the estimated revenue £85,050,000. He proposes to apply £1,000,000 of the profits of the conversion of cohsols towards the

deficiency, and £500,000 from the same source to the reduction of the National Debt. £BOO,OOO is to be raised during the current year, and £1,00,000 next year, by the imposition of 1 per cent additional death duty on estates over £IO,OOO. £300,000 will also be raised by increasing the beer tax onefifteenth of a penny, leaving a margin of £182,000. Mr Goschen said that he desired to deal with the whole question of death dues, but he was afraid it would occupy all the session. He hoped to deal with the gold currency in a separate measure. THE EMPRESS ELIZABETH. Vienna, April 15. The Empress Elizabeth, who recently threatened to commit suicide, is emerging from her state of nervous excitement, induced by the suicide of the Crown Prince, and her complete recovery is hoped for. Webster, the Attorney-General, was received with great enthusiasm. SHIP COLLISION. The steamers Libra and Stamcliffe came into collision off Boston, a seaport in Lincolnshire.
