NATIVE GAME.

Sib, —In your issue of to-day I notice a letter signed “ Inquirer,” asking for information with reference to the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, and that you refer him to me to supply it. The officers of the society are Mr Fulbert Archer, chairman, Mr James Granger, treasurer, and myself, secretary Its affairs are managed by a council or committee elected from members of all parts of the district. If “ Inquirer ” wishes to become a member, all he has to do is to forward his name and address to the treasurer with his subscription of £2 2s, when, if elected, he will be eligible as a member of the council. The society will prosecute in every case reported to them of persons shooting game or native game out of season, but not for the mere trespass on private property, as they consider that to be the duty of the owner. Not a single case of illegal shooting has been reported to the society this season, neither am I aware of one myself personally, so “ Inquirer’s ” statement that the society has declined to inquire into cases of illegal shooting reported to them is, to say the least of it, misleading. The Hook is in the Waimate County Acclimatisation Society’s district, and I have no doubt if “ Inquirer ” will report the cases he speaks of to the hon. secretary at Waimate, a prosecution will undoubtedly follow. “ Inquirer ” asks, why does not the society “ prosecute persons who are shooting on the creeks and lagoons about ? ” If he will only come forward and give me particulars of a single case of illegal shooting, he will find that the society will do its duty. I am, etc., Aethub Peeet, Hon Secretary. Timaru, 12th April, 1889.
