Stockbrokers and the Ten Commandments.

AN AMUSING INQUIRY.

An ingenious reporter of the New York World, having first made sure that the “ Ten Commandments" were to be found in the twentieth chapter of Exodus, thought he would interview the brokers and financiers of the Now York Exchange and see whether they were ns well up in the subject as himself. Accordingly, ho went down into Wall-street, where graven images are supposed to be worshipped, to find out how many knew them. Ho toiled among the money-makers, and below is the fruit of his labours. Each bull and bear was candidly asked if he could repeat the Ten Commandments, or, failing in this, what portion, if any, of the laws of Moses he could bring to mind. The following was the result :

F, N. Lawrence : I could not quote the Ten Commandments in an off-hand way, but you will find them in Genesis, or if not there in Exodus.

George W. Ely, Secretary of the Stock Exchange : I know the Ten Commandments by heart. Where are they ? Sit down five •minutes and I’ll tell you. (Five minutes elapse, during which time Mr Ely retires to his private office) Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Leviticus, Deuteronomy—that’s where they are.

Gen. C. H. T. Collis : I don’t care to contribute to the folly of the world. I have too much to do with the serious side of it. I know the eleventh commandment. It is, “ Mind your own business," and the man that does that has his hands full.

Col. J. 0. Beiff : If you meant the Mount Sinai edition, I know where that is to bo found. If you mean the Wall street edition, I don’t where to look for it.

Henry Clews: The fault of the Ten Commandments is they have no relation to finance. But when they are lived up to we shall have arrived at millennium.

Stephen U. Cold well: I know the tenth commandment. I don’t think it is in general operation in Wall-street. I can give you some extra commandments.

S. H. Kneeland : The Ten Commandments are by Moses, and are in Duteronomy. They are applied in Wall-street in more ways than one.

Isidor Wormser : Oh, everybody knows the Commandments. They are in the prayerbook.

P. E. Livermore: I don’t think I can repeat them. Where in the Bible are they to be found? You are asking too much, Moses had the original ones on a slab. P. W. Gallaudet: I think I shall require a little time for meditation. H. Victor Newcomb: The Ten Commandments are in Deuteronomy. I used to bo able to repeat them, W. B. Dowd : I dont tliink the Commandments are in the archives of the Stock Exchange. On file there! Oh, get out! Col. Thomas L. Watson ; In my younger days I was familiar with them. Where are they found ? Como in to-morrow. From the course you are pursuing, I think they ought to bo found in Eevelations. George Eutledge Gibson : I suppose Moses is responsible, in a great measure, for the Ten Commandments, isn’t he ? Now I’m not going to give information on this subject. This is no Sunday-school. Harvey Kennedy ; It isn’t well for a man to tell all ho knows, but you look in Kxodus. John fl. Davis : I am not here to answer conundrums. H. K. Burraa; I say the Lord’s Prayer regularly and it does me good. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. They don't all adopt this motto down here. W. L. Bull, President of the Stock Exchange : The Commandments are in the twentieth chapter of Exodus, and I can repeat them all. I know of no additional commandments. The man who carries the tea out does well. Eichard G. Murphy: Why certainly, I know the Ten Commandments. Come and see me in two or throe days and I’ll have them all written out for you. 0. Feliowes: The Ten Commandments are in Exodus, but they are partially effaced from the tablets of my memory, Noah Content : I say the Commandments regularly. What are they. Um, oh. Where are they ? Um, ah; A. W. PetKty chairman of tlip CobboUi

dated Stock Exchange : Yes, I know the Ten Commandments. They are—just [wait until I can refresh my memory. John H. de Mott: They are somewhere in Exodus, and were written before Moses broke the slabs and let the Jews out.

L. G. Qninlin : The balance of the Commandments I am a little short of. Frank Savin: I don’t know as I would repeat the Ten Commandments, but they are in Genesis.

Henry S. Ives : They are in Judges. C. A. Harned : I read the Bible from cover to cover and never missed a word. Not many men can say that. John B. Hilyer: Of course I know the Ten Commandments, but I’ve got to catch a train.
