NEWS OF THE DAY

At the Baptist Church last evening there was a good attendance, notwithstanding the unfavourable weather, to hoar Mrs Brown deliver a lecture upon the birth, marriage, and funeral customs of the natives of India. During her six years residence in that country Mrs Brown has constantly visited the Hindoo women in their houses, so speaks from personal knowledge, and is able to giro much interesting information. The lecture was illustrated by coloured pictures of the various gods of the country, and three young ladies were seated on the platform attired in the garb of Hindoo women, representing the unmarried girl, the wife, and the widow, the peculiarities of the dress of each being described in detail. The audience were evidently pleased with the address, and responded liberally to the appeal from the chairman (the Rev. E. Austin, of the Congregational Church) for a good collection, which will materially assist in defraying the expenses connected with the re-painting of the Baptist Church.
