A serious accident happened near Waimato on Wednesday morning to James Patterson, who was working at a threshing mill on Mr Brinkman’s farm. It appears that the mill had just finished threshing a stack, and was opening out another, when Patterson stepped from a newly built stage on to tho mill, and missing his footing fell. His right leg went into the drum of tho machine. The moment the man fell into the machine the belt went off, and when Patterson was taken out it was found that his right leg was completely smashed to a pulp up to the top of the thigh. The sufferer was taken immediately to the hospital, where everything possible is being done for him, but his injuries are so great that he is not expected to recover. Tho annual meeting of the Waimato Debating Club was held at tho Library Hall on Thursday evening. There were about a dozen members present, Mr G. M. Boss in the chair. Tho secretary read tho annual report, which showed that there were six debates during last session, with an average attendance of 25, and that there was a balance of £1 8s to the club’s credit at the bank. The report was adopted, and the following were elected as officers for the ensuing year:— President, Mr G. M. Boss (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mr G. H, Graham and Mr J. 0. Adams; secretary and treasurer, Mr A, 0. Blake (re-elected) ; committee, Messrs J. E. Vernon, A. Watt, and B. G, Baxter. It was resolved that the meetings be held every alternate Tuesday, commencing at 7.30 p.m., and that the secretary write to the Library Committee about renting tho Library Hall for | holding tho meetings during the season ; tho first meeting to bo held on the 30th instant. Mr Graham gave notice of motion for next meeting : — 11 That at tho meeting on the 30th instant he will move that ladies be admitted as members of this club, on the same terms as gentlemen in every respect except that of subscription; ladies to be admitted without payment.” Tho meeting then closed.
