FRIGHTFUL ACCIDENT.

A WOMAN SUN OYER IN,THE MAIN ROAD. A woman named Mary Ann Collis, wife of William Collis, who is well known in the employ of the Timaru Harbor Board, was found lying at the corner of the Main South Road and High street at 12.30 am. to-day. She was discovered by Messrs E. Smith and Jas. Hennicker, employees at Bruce’s flour mill* and as they noticed that she was terribly injured they first of all carried her to the end of the drill shed, and then sent for the police. Constables Daly and Satchsvell, who were on night duty in the main road, quickly arrived. It was found that Mrs Collis was suffering from a severe scalp wonnd, and complained of violent pains in the back and both arms. She slated, in reply to questions, that she had been knocked down by a four wheeled trap, the latter then going over the upper part of her body. The constables named, with the assistance of the mill men, then got a stretcher and conveyed the unfortunate woman to the Timaru Hospital, On arrival Dr Lawson, hospital surgeon, assisted by Dr Lovegrovo, made an examination of the injuries. The medical gentlemen found Mrs Collis suffering from a compound fracture of both arms, above the elbow, the fracture the right arm being of a comminuted nature. The scalp wound is an ugly and severe one, and the woman has also received serious internal injuries. The wounds were skilfully dressed' but the doctors stale that there is very little hope of the patient recovering from the fearful injuries slie has received. The police are busy making enquiries into tho whole matter, but up to a late hour to-day had not got any information about the four wheeler which is alleged to have been tho cause of tho accident.
