Tho chairman stated that, in company with tho overseer, ho had mot Mr Sugrue, at Orari, re taking land for road purposes. Ho found that it would be necessary to take 32 perches, half of which was in the riverbed. He bad offered £7 10s for the property, but 3Stj* Sugrue would not take less than £l2. “

The board decided to stand by the chair* mania pffpp.'' " J '• ilv '•

In reference to a petition presented at last meeting by Mr Binskin, re an outlet to secs lions at Orari, the chairman stated that bp had been in communication with Mr Howey, who had bought some of the property, re taking the necessary land for the road. Mr Howey had offered to exchange his property for some vested in tho board, thereby simplifying matters. The exchange was agreed to. The matter of the forthcoming annual election was gone into. It was decided that Mr W. Shiers be appointed returning officer. The chairman stated that during tho month

ho had accepted the tender of Edmond Burke, for willow stakes and tops at Orari, Approved of. Tenders were opened as follows :■ — Ford and culvert, boundary road, near Smithfield—" Jonas Fifield, £lO, was the only tenderer and his tender was accepted. Ford and shingle Shaw’s road, Geraldine Flat—There being no tender for this contract it was left with the overseer to do it by day labour.

Ford and shingle, Eakabu road, near Findlay’s—Jonas Fifield, £ls, was the only tenderer and his tender was accepted. Correspondence was read and dealt with as

follows : From Mr William Storey, asking to have his name struck off the roll for section 30900 and that of Mr Matthew Daly substituted. Mr Daly’s consent to be first obtained. From the South Canterbury Charitable Aid

Board, forwarding copy of a resolution requesting the Eoad Board to forward parti • culars of any case in which their recommendationshad not been attended to. The chairman was requested to reply, pointing out the cases referred to in previous correspondence. From the Geraldine County Council ire annual account and statement of receipts and expenditure. The overseer’s report was read us follows * “ Works in hand.—'Very good progress has been made with the contracts in hand during the month. A contract was let for providing willows for the protective works. The work is now proceeding satisfactorily. “ Valley Point.—l have had a few iron rails driven at the Valley point to save the willows formerly planted there, also one main pile at the Valley school bridge. “ Lewis drain.—As directed I have again

visited this drain, and made an inspection in company with Mr Lewis. He explained the work ho claims payment for was done some months ago, and not recently. This consists of deepening and cleaning out the drain on the west side of the embankment which the board contributed towards the erection of some five years ago; also in stopping a few gaps mado by flood-water in tbe above-men-tioned bank. . “ Biver terrace near Orari Bridge.—To fullv secure the willow protective work below the bridge in a similar manner to the work above the bridge would require about 40 additional iron rails to be driven. We have a few in stock, but most of them are in too short lengths for the Orari, and would not have sufficient hold of the riverbed.

“ Draught Dorse.—l have had a horse on trial for the past fortnight, and from what I have seen I think he will bo a very suitable horse for the board’s work if they decide to purchase him. •* Spring Dray— The spring dray built by Mr W. Campbell has been completed, and is now in the board’s yard waiting inspection. “River Crossings.—The crossings on tho Boundary Road and Findlay’s have been attended to, and the grade eased at tho former one by filling in with shingle. “ Road diversion —The work on the road diversion, near Mr Kelland’s, is being pro"

needed with, and will be out of hand in a few days. The plans for taking the land under the “Public Works Act,” are laid on tho table for inspection. “ Feed oats—A small quantity of feed oats will be required for the board’s horso.” It was decided that two days’ work be allowed to Mr Lewis for making up embank-

ment ; to secure rails required for works at Oran Bridge ; that tho draught horso be purchased It was decided to have tho ford on the Black Creek, near Captain Wright’s property, attended to.

In view of tho approaching annual election of members, it was decided to hold another meeting of the board on Wednesday, Ist May, and to hold the election on Monday, 6th May, Accounts amounting to £lB3 19s 9d were passed for payment, and tho board then rose.
