A very important trial of reapers and binders is to bo held at Mr E, Timaru Rhodes’ Hadlow estate on Thursday next. No fewer than six machines arc to bo in the field.

It is probable that the second eleven of the Timaru Cricket Club will play an eleven of the Zcalandia Cricket Club on Thursday week. The latter club has decided to send a challenge to Temuka to play an eleven there on Saturday week.. The Atlas mill ran its first night shift last night, and the electric lamps, it may be stated, made the mill as light as day, seemingly even lighter. But for one pair of cogged wheels in the wheat cleaning branch, that growl disagreeably (but which need not run o’ nights) the neighbors would have little reminder that the machinery was in motion.

St Mary’s parish picnic is to take place on Thursday week, the 31st inst, A new industry is lo be started in Waimalo in the shape of a flax mill. Messrs Knight and Studholme have made arrangements for the erection of a mill somewhere near the lake, and the buildings are to be commenced immediately. As the m : U will find work for about twenty men and boys it will do considerable good to Waimate, and we trust the proprietors will profit largely by their venture.

A special Government daylight parade of the C Battery, N.Z.A., is ordered for this evening nt half-past seven, when every member wi'l be required to attend in marching order, and produce all Government or battery property on issue to him or in his possession, for inspection and re-iesuo. It is also notified that any other persons having in their possession any uniform, arms or accoutrements issued to or by the battery must return the same at or before to-night’s parade, and that anyone retaining any such arms or other property after this dale will be proceeded against under the provisions of the Defence Act.

The annual general meeting of the Eairlie Creek Racing Club was held on Saturday evening last. There was a good attendance of members. The following officers wore elected for the ensuing year President, Mr James Milne; vice-president, Mr Robert Allan ; treasurer, Mr J. Gall; secretary, Mr M. McLeod. Thursday, the 28th day of March, was fixed for the annual race meeting. A programme something similar to last year's was drawn up and adopted. It will be published in due course.

Mr 0. E. Hugo delivered hie fourth lecture Inst evening, on “ Month and Lips,” when he had a good audicnco who evidently enjoyed tho discourse, to judge by the frequent laughter. Mr Hugo described the various forms and shapes of lips, and showed a wealth of illustration which could not help proving attractive as well as instructive. At the close of the address some ladies and gentlemen went up on the platform and had their dispositions delineated in a very amusing manner. The next and last lecture will bo given to-morrow. The Canterbury and Otago Almanac for 1889 is now published, and can be obtained from all booksellers and agents for the I imaeu Herald in South Canterbury.
