Mackenzie County Council

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mackenzie County Connoil was held at Burke’s Pass on Monday the 7th reornary. —• Messrs {.John. McGregor (Chairman), J. S.Rutherford, A. Cowan, Jas. Milne,F. R. Gillingham and Captain Hayter. The Clerk and Overseer’s reports were read and considered. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : From Geo. F. Clulee, tendering bis resignation as the Council's representative on the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. From the Secretary of the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board notifying that Mr Clulee had resigned. From the Bank of New Zealand re cemetery account, that fixed,deposit £SO had matured with interest. Resolved that £75 be placed at interest for 12 months,leaving the credit balance at the cemetery current account £8 8a sd. From Michael Corkery, enclosing half year’s rent of Horse Shoe Bend reserve. From the Secretary of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, forwarding annual report for 1886. From the manager Ben Oban station, forwarding account for £2 9a 10d for new rope for Oban ferry, granted by Connoil last November. From the Colonial Secretary, acknowledging receipt of copy of resolutions at last meeting, re rabbits in the vicinity of the Chau Gorge. From J. E. Goodwin, enclosing cheque for rates and notifying that the Messrs Gillingham would pay the rates on his brother’s land. From the Property Tax Department, forwarding form for demanding rates on Crown Lands and requesting the same to be filled io. From M. J. Lynch, solicitor, stating cost of special act re alteration of Mackenzie and Waimate County boondaries. The Clerk was instructed to proceed with the business. Prom A. Grant, Grey’s Hills, forwarding cheque for rates, and further protesting against valuation on Education Reserves. From Wm. Pringle agreeing to bear share of cost re County boundaries. From P. B Boulton, Chief Inspectoral Sheep, Christobarcb, stating that be was coming to inspect the Chau district re rabbits, and requesting that some one be sent with him on Council’s behalf. Resolved—“ That some one be sent as required, the Clerk to make the necessary arrangements. From Joseph H. Gason, with reference to bis throwing up the contract for painting, tarring, and repairs to the Tekapo Bridge—that ho had misunderstood the specifications and could not do the work at the pries he tendered, 'and requesting that the Council would return him bis deposit. Resolved —“That the deposit be returned, bnt that the Connell's action was not to be considered as a precedent. From John Forgan re bis application for £lO, for shingle removed from bis property and damage thereto ; forwarding copy of two letters supposed to bear on the case, and stating that unless the Council settled the matter amicably, he wonld be placed in a position forcing him to resort to strong measures to recover the amount. Letter received. With reference to the fixed deposit £4,500, due at the Bank of New Zealand, Timaru, on the fith March, it was resolved that the same amount be placed at interest for 12 months, BATES. In the matter of unpaid rates, the Clerk was instructed to pot a notice in the paper in a fortnights time to the effect that all rates unpaid in fourteen days would be sued for. Accounts amounting to £226 4s 5d were passed for payment and the meeting adjourned.
