The B.D. liner Koranni leaves Lyttelton for this port to-day, and sails for Wellington direct to-morrow. The Formosa arrived from Newcastle this morning about 11 o’clock, alter a passage of 17 days, fihe was brought alongside the Handa Isle, at 1.30, and has a full cargo of coals for Mr W. Evans. Captain McKenzie, of the barquentine Handa Isle was, at latest accounts, in a very low state. The vessel shipped Capt Arzndt, who, we believe, is well known at this port, and sailed for Timaru on Saturday last, from the Bluff, —arriving this morning. She has a full cargo of coals for MrW. Evans.
The barque Deva, a fine iron vessel of 761 tons, arrived from Auckland yesterday afternoon about 4.40, after beating about the roadstead all day. She left Auckland on the 19th, in ballast, and was detained, no doubt, by light winds, which prevailed for the last few days. She will load grain for Home, on account of the N.Z. Grain Agency.
There is being built at the Victoria Foundry, Wellington, a tug of 60 horsepower, for Kennedy Bros., of Greymouth, She is to be employed in towing vessels over the bar at that port. Originally the steamer Maori (until lately running between Dunedin and Oamarn) was intended for that work, but the owners decided to have her fitted with the boilers formerly in thes.B. Charles Edward, and to have a new vessel built to take the engines of the tugboat Lioness, which was wrecked some time ago. The new steamer will measure 105 ft overall, 76ft beam, and 10ft 6in of hold. It is to be ready by December next. The Auckland “ Star’s ” London correspondent says : —"I learn that the close rapproachement which I formerly mentioned as obtaining between the White Star and Shaw-Savill Shipping Companies has led to those two corporations combining to •hare the New Zealand trade, and, if possible. to take the " shine ’’ out of the Now ZeslandiShippingJCompany in the matter of direct steamers. The White Star people having intimated their willingness to run the lonic and Doric to New Zealand at their own risk, an arrangement was come to whereby the Shaw-Savill Company agree not to run their own steamers in opposition. This is practically, therefore, an amalgamation of these two Companies, and it ought to have a powerful Influence on the direct •team trade to your colony.”
