A SINGULAR FIND.
A singular find of a £lO note was made by Mr S. H. Butler, shire engineer to the Dunolly and Bet Bet Shire Councils, recently. Mr Butler found the note in the stuffing betweep the lining of an old armchair, which is in use in the shire hall. To this note hangs a tale. On the 25th July, 1876, nomination papers were received by the shire secretary, Mr George Cooke, since dead, for the position of auditor to the shire, a £lO deposit accompanying each nomination paper. Amongst these was one from Mr J. H. Yates. Although the secretary knew he had received the note and paper from Mr Yates, it mysteriously disappeared, and be was at a loss to account for the strange disappearance to the Council, and was placed in a rather awkward predicament. The Council ultimately made good the £lO note to Mr Yates ; but they were anything but satisfied with the secretary’s explanation regarding the loss. The appearance of the note has removed the nnjust suspicion entertained.
