A PROTEST.
[To the Editor.]
Sib, —I cannot allow the Head Master of the Waimate Public School to leave the District without publicly, by your leave in your valuable paper, which has much influence in Waimate, saying that the Board of Education has committed an egregious blander in persecuting such a man out of this district. Ho was brought from England some half score years ago, being one of a few teachers carefully selected there, and he has spent most of his colonial life in Waimate, and has done most excellent work. The District was exceedingly fortunate in securing the services of such a man.
When, however, the,Board embarked on their secondary scheme, Mr Ward was told ho must graduate or go. To a man in middle life, and whoso energies were fully taxed during the day without private study, this meant going, and so Mr Ward has had to break up his home in Waimate, and recommence his work at Kiccarton. He has done well, but it has been of no avail. Small encouragement to men who are doing likewise does this Waimate business afford. But what is sauce for goose is sauce for gauder. If the Presbytery were to visit Mr Barclay’s district as an inspectoral body, and found matters right, what would he say if nevertheless they said, “ Go, for thou art idle in the vineyard,” or, if a shareholder iu a paper said, “ We get ten per cent, still we must reduce the salaries of the staff or make them go,” what kind of justice would it be?
Of oourso if the district spiritually was in a bad state, or if the paper did not pay fair justice would be done by a clearance. “Do unto others as ye would that others would do unto you,” is a motto the Board should lay to heart, A Waimatexte.
