THE AUSTRALIAN STATION.
The Admiral appointed to the command of the Australian squadron is Rear-Admiral Sir Frederick Wm, Richards, K.C.8., F.R,G.S., late Lord of the Admiralty, commodore and senior officer on the West Coast of Africa, and aide-de-oamp to the Queen. This distinguished naval officer served during the Zulu and Boer wars from March, 1879; accompanied the Ekowe relief column; was present at the battle of Gingihloo, 2nd April, 1879 (medal and clasps,) present at the action at Laing’s Neck during the Boer war, 28th January 1881. Admiral Richards is the first officer who takes command in these seas as an admiral, the command hitherto having been held by a commodore.
