The following is a statement of the number of offences committed in the South Canterbury district during the year 1883, with a corresponding list for 1882. 1882. 1883. Number of offences reported 2124 1902 Number of persons apprehended or summoned 2105 1861 Committed for trial ... 47 33 Summarily convicted ... 1758 1648 Discharged 300 180 Of the 1861 persons apprehended or summoned 1747 were males and 114 females. The 33 committed for trial were all males; 1550 males and 98 females were summarily convicted, and 164 males “and 16 females discharged. The return for the Timaru sub-district is as follows * 1882. 1883; Number of offence reported 708 648 Number of persons apprehended or summoned 699 648 Committed for trial ... 28 13 Summarily convicted ... 546 549 Discharged 125 86 Of the 648 persons arrested or summoned last year 611 were males and 37 females. The 13 committed for trial were all males. Of the 549 summarily dealt with, 516 were males and 33 females and of the 86 discharged 82 were males and 4 females.
