Sudden DeathThames, Jan. 22. A sudden death has occurred here. Thos. Rawdon, the Borough Foreman of Works, and one of the pioneers of the Thames goldfields, was found dead in his office this morning. He returned from a trip to To Aroha yesterday evening, complaining of being shaken by the coach. He was not seen after five o’clock till found this morning. He had been ailing for some time. Wellington RegattaWellington, Jan. 22. The weather having cleared, the Regatta Committee decided to start the programme. The first event, the Volanteer Boat Race, was won by the Wellington Naval Brigade. Wesleyan Conference. At the- Wesleyan Conference this morning, the following probationary ministers, Revs. Brook, Dukes and G-fiffen, .underwent their final examinations before the Conference, and were admitted into full connexion as ministers. The Revs Watkin and Kidd were thanked for their services as prin- . cipal and tutor of Wesley College, and were reappointed. The Rev. J. Smalley, a supernumerary, was re-admitted to full' work. A fierce sou’-wester, accompanied by heavy rain, has prevailed all night and stiil continues. It is feared great damage to the crops will be the result. Police StatisticsDunedin, Jan. 22. The police statistics for the Dunedin District shew in 1883, 3703 offences reported, 3427 arrests and prosecutions. In 1882, 3667 offences, 3382 arrests. The prosecutions show an increase in drunkenness and petty larcenies, but decreases in serious offences.
