The consecration of Dr Alfred Barry to the Metropolitan See of Sydney, New South Wales, took place at Westminster Abbey to-day. The ceremony was very largely attended both by clergy and laity, and all parts of the edifice were crowded. Causes of the Brogden Failure. The failure of Messrs Alexander and Henry Brogden is attributed to the rejection of their appeal to the Government of New Zealand for the liquidation of their claims in connection with colonial railway contracts, and to numerous minor failures in the iron trade. (Received Jan, 3,1884,1.10 a.m.) Irish Disturbances. Great excitement prevailed at Promote, County Down, Ireland, in consequence of Orange and [Parnellite meetings. The Orangemen, who numbered fully 20,000 men, attacked a Parnellite gathering, but a strong force of troops was present, and prevented a serious collision of the two factions. The New Prelate* Canon Westcott, who preached the sermon at the consecration of Dr Barry, in referring to the ceremony, spoke upon the peculiar fitness of Dr Barry for the office to which he has been chosen. Shipping. Arrived at Plymouth to-day—P. and O. steamship Thames, from Melbourne (Nov. 8), and Orient steamship Chimborazo, from Melbourne (Nov. 17). San Fbancisco, Deo. 31. Bishop Barry is expected to leave for Australia in the Valetta, on February 14th. The report as to the intended formation of an armed Orange militia in Ulster is denied. The English revenue for the year is £90,000,000.
