The official procession left shortly after half-past ten in the morning, arriving at the Amateur Athletic Club’s ground, which had been obtained for the occasion on very reasonable terms, about eleven o’clock when a start was at once effected. The attendance of the public in the early part of the day was not numerous, but after twelve o’clock it grew rapidly until it reached fully 3000 or 3500. The excellence of the grounds and their general suitableness for the purpose of the gathering quite counterbalanced any inconvenience arising from their distance from town. The “ cinder path,” on which some £3OO has already been expended was not yet hardened sufficiently; but in every other respect the course was in splendid .order. The booths erected by the various caterers were spacious, and they were well-patronised during the day. The buyers of the privileges were, on the whole, “in luck’s way." The weather happily favored the sports very much, for it was simply delightful after the inclemency we have lately experienced. The programme, which was a very long one, was gone through with spirit, and a general disposition was manifested by the spectators as well as the performers to enjoy themselves. Proprietors of vehicles had a busy and a profitable time for they seemed never to be without a load. The general enjoyment was only slightly interrupted, when, about four o’clock, the pole on which was hoisted the standard of the “Lion of Scotland," suddenly gave way, and was precipitated among the crowd. Strange to say, no one was struck. The thanks of the public are due to the untiring secretary, Mr Sydney Davies, to Mr Jones, stationmaster, and to the Police, for their successful efforts to keep the fun going, to administer the various arrangements, and to make things orderly and comfortable. ' 1 ■' 1 .

A splendid; Scotch entertainment was given in the theatre last evening. The house was absolutely packed with people, , and the programme, which was a very; f" diversified one, was gone through in the - \ most spirited banner, to the intense v delight o£ the audience, who were . . liberal of their', applause (md encores, and gave everjp encouragement to the, ! performers. Limited space forbids oar giving a detailed description of the entertainment, but special mention ought to -■ be made of the overture by Mr Haigh’a >' string band, and of M»( Muller’s capital • accompaniments. Those to whom it falls to accompany songc would do well ;' to take a leaf out of Mr Muller’s book, ■ ; for he invariably aids the singer, and never obtrudes his own playing, os accompanists are often apt to do. One. or .. two singers were considerably disr, -. turbed by noises in the wings, and by the crying of fractious children, in the audience. Children in arms , really ought not to be admitted to’ 1 ”; theatres and concert halls. The thanks ' of the audience are espeoially due to the plaided” dancers, Mr McDonald, the hiper, Mr Neil Fleming of Camara, who besides singing “ Battle of Stirling" gave a capital racy anecdotal speech, \\ provoking roars of laughter, and to Mr Sttachan. of Waimate, who recited aa irresistibly comic domes tic scene, which fairly brought the homo down. the affaiir will long bo remembered as flar and s way the most successful entertainment over given in Timaru. ! . - : jO SECOND DAY, , The weather to-day proved still , bore desirable than yo iterday, the sky ' being somewhat overcast and the air '!/. \ being tempered by a gentle breeze. ° The attendance of the public wss ; smaller, not moro thin 1000 persons being present. The Artillery Band was again present and much enlivened the proceedings with their excolljQt ’ ■ i music. The greatest int, ereet _ poared to be taken in the but the events were somehow slowly.

This contest was a complete fiasco. The caber pro vided was a bine gum stem, 12ft Bin in length, perfectly green, and of enormous weight. After the competitors had vainly attempted to balance- it, a portion was sawn off, leaving it lift. Sin. in length, its diameter at both ends being 5 and 7 . inches respectively. Even when this , had been done, it was plain that the caber was entirely beyond the powers of the competitors, and neither of the prize men succeeded in throwing it fairly. 200 Yards Handicap Race. First prize. £3 ; second, £2.; third, £l. B. Nicholls (15yds) ... 1 J. Fraser (10yds) ... ... 2 J. Cranston (16yds) ... 3 . Five others competed. • This was a very exciting race. Nicholls at the start immediately fell into third place, which he didnotebange Until .within 25 yards of j the goal, when • he suddenly.shot.ahead. Ho ran in a - winner by ,a couple of strides only, , Fraser pressing him to the last moment, and Cranston coining in a good third. Bagpipe Music in Costume, (1) Strath* peys.
