The Secretary of Customs has favored ns with the following telegram, received from Mr Wilson, of the Marino Department, announcing the successful opening of the lighthouse on Waipapa Point: —“lnvercargill, Jan. 2.—Lighted np last night; everything right." SuicideAn elderly man named Thomas G. Pickers, who had for a number of years been employed by the City Council, committed suicide this morning by hanging himself. He was 64 years of age and had been in depressed spirits for some time. Attempted Suicide. A man named Robert Muir attempted suicide to-day by throwing himself into the harbor He was rescued by some young men. Cricket Match. Nelson, Jan. 2. The cricket match Wellington v. Nelson was continued yesterday. Wellington in their second innings made 42, of which 11 were extras, Nelson thus won by 39 runs. Sudden Death. Boss, Jan. 2. A sudden death occurred here last night to the wife of the head teaclier at Ross State school (Winchester), who had been ailing for the last three days. Nothing serious was anticipated, and yesterday her husband and family went picnicing, and when they returned found she was dead. , Committed for Trial. Hawesa, Jan. 2.
