AN OLD AND FICKLE L.L.D.
Once more a remorseless court of law has been exposing to the public gaze the tender effusions of a foolish lover. He was an L.L.D. and F.R.G.S. "aged 65. She (Mrs Kett) was an enchanting widow of 26. Seeking employment through the medium of an agency managed by Muir, the amorous LLJD-, she was informed that he had selected for her the position of wife to himself. Letters followed in shoals at the rate of twenty-five a month, sometimes throe in a day. She was styled his “ darling pet.” In pathetic terms he expresses sorrow for her “ poor foot,” yearns that she were the Pope that he might be “ privileged to kiss it,” and asks for the size in cardboard of her “ precious little finger” that he might procure an engagement ring. A prospect of future bliss here opens whereat language fails the doctor, and he concludes with a wild gasp of unutterables, “Oh my .” After all this an anti-climax of a startling character is reached. When the brideelect, in answer to his loving request that his purse should pay for the trosseau, put down the amount required as £SO, the doctor flew into a passion, declared that if the lady, lately the object of his mad adoration, troubled him again he would handhor over to the police. After reflection cooled the heat of his rage, for he had not the indiscretion to appear to an action for breach of promise he now stands cast in £SOO damages and costs.—“ Sheffield Telegraph.”
