(Pib Pbkss Asbooutioh.) THIS DAT. Sporting. Wehinpton, Dec. 17. Hercules has been scratched for the Wellington Cup. Sports at Christchurch. The Caledonian games to-day were very successful, over 2000 persons being present. The weather was delightful. The Five-mile Walking Handicap was won by G. Speight, 800yds start; 6. Muhlison, 750yds, 2 ; J._ M. O’Connor, scratch, 3, Time—4o|min. Deputation re Railway RatesChristchurch, Dec. 17. A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce waited (upon the Hon E. Michelson with a view of calling his attention to the necessity for a revision of the railway rates, more particularly on the Lyttelton and Christchurch and Christchurch and Timaru lines. The deputation having fully explained their objections to the present tariff, the hon. gentleman promised to give them full consideration, and forward a reply in due course. Anniversary Festivities. The thirty-third anniversary of the Province is commemorated to-day by a general holiday, and various festivities. The weather is beautifully fine. The public attractions include the opening of the Industrial Exhibition, Caledonian sports at Lancaster Park, Popular sports at Hagley Park, horse races at Amberley, excursions by steamer to Akaroa and Pigeon Bay. A pyrotechnic display by the Fire Brigade, will take ploce in Hagley Park in the evening. Otago Representatives at the Colonial Rifle Match. Dunedin, Dec. 14. Otago will be represented at the Colonial Prize firing at Auckland, by Kennedy, the champion; Sergeant Hogg, Clutha ; Volunteer Sontag, VVaikari; Corporal Reynolds, B Battery; Lieut. Captain Anderson leaves her to become superintendent for the Albion and Shaw Savill Company at Port Chalmers. Captain Hird takes command of the Marlborough, Mr Gordon, Chief Officer of the Taranaki, being promoted to the command of that vessel. Wild Wave, barque from Hobart, LarrikinismInvercargill, Dec. 17. At the City Police Court to-day, two lads, charged with causing a disturbance at the Salvation Army services, were fined 10s each, in default 48 hours imprisonment. They pleaded not guilty, and their lawyer defined the hall as a place where people could as they pleased, but the Court demurred to this view, holding that it was like any other place or worship. Supreme Court* The Supreme Court opens to-morrow, there are only 5 cases criminal, and none of them serious.
