Mr Murray Smith has entered a formal protest against the adoption of the Bill which is now before the French Legislature for the deportation of criminals to the South Pacific. A trading company, consisting of 30 adventurers has been organised. They proposed to sail for Now Guinea under

the command of Mr Konnerley, a member of the Executive Council of Tasmania ; but on the matter being brought under the notice of Earl Derby, his Lordship refused to sanction the expedition.

Sir Dillon Bell is compiling a statement setting forth the views of the colonies in relation to the deportation of French criminals to the islands of the Pacific. This work has been undertaken at the special request of Lord Derby. An advertisement was published in yesterday’s papers inviting tenders for a loan of £IOO,OOO for the Timaru Harbor Corporation. The prospectus of the New Zealand Land and Mortgage Company was advertised in yesterday’s papers. The capital of the Company is £2,000,000. The “ Standard" criticises the project in an adverse spirit. Dec. 4. The objections raised by the Australian colonies to the Bill now before the French Legislature for the deportation of French criminals to islands in the South Pacific, have again been brought prominently under the notice of the British Government.
