Steele, who was burned at Matanra on Monday, died yesterday morning after great suffering. He has left a widow and family of five in straitened circumstances. Steele was formerly a printer and paper bag maker in a small way in Invercargill. At the quarterly meeting of the Temuka Licensing Committee on Tuesday, an application for a transfer of the license of the Temuka Hotel, from E. Fenton to J. Lye, was adjourned for six weeks. The police complained that Mr Kirk, licensee of the Crown Hotel, had neglected to give the police information of a poisoning case in bis bouse, unt ;i . after the girl who had taken the poison had died. The committee pointed out to Mr F : rk that it was the duty of all licensees to give the police every information in their power.
