ACCOMMODATION FOB A FEW RESPECTABLE BOARDERS. AT Mrs W b r r y’s, Sophia Street, Timabu. £1 A WEES. NOTICE. . IN REPLY ta the Advertisement in the “Timaru Herald” of FRIDAY, signed by a ritlmber of the local Bakers, end containing several charges against me in connection with the late action re INCREASED PRICE OF BREAD, I Beg to state that—(l) I never denied having signed the notice, but I did so without a full knowledge of the motives which actuated the movers; and when, on the following TUESDAY, I found the real motive was that they wished to recompense themselves for the extra weight they would be competed to giv;—they having, heretofore, given only an average of 3£lbs for the 41b loaf —I decided to have no more to do with the matter, (2) I never in any manner whatsoever attempted to influence Mr Douglas to sign any document, and I hereby challenge those bakers whose names are appended to the notice to prove the charge they have made. (3) In reference to my offering the use of a room for meeting purposes, I may simply state that it was in deference to the feelings of Mr Burford who as a Salvationist and Blue Ribbonist, objected to a meeting in a public house. I leave the public to judge from this, which was the most honorable course ; that of other bakers in raising the price of bread without any just cause, or my own action in having withdrawn at once on finding the cause was not a just one. JOHN O’DOWD. I hereby give further notice that unless an ample APOLOGY is published in the “ Timaru Herald ” and South Canterbury Times, WITHIN THPEE DAYS FROM DATE,I will take LEGAL PROCEEDINGS against a’ 1 , the HONORABLE MEN whose names are appended to the notice. (Signed) JOHN O’DOWD. Timaru, Nov. 30, 1883.

NOTICE. SEEING the Advertisement of MU O’DOWD, last evening, stating that ho DID NOT SIGN THE LIST OF HIS OWN FREE WILL, I beg to state that Mr O’Dowd was the man that was instrumental in GETTING ME TO SIGN the said List. As I only bake about 18 or 20 Loaves per day, I did not think it necessary to cooperate with the others in raising the Price until Mr O’Dowd called, asking for me to be unanimous with the rest. JOHN DOUGLAS. NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC. WE the Undersigned Bakers of Timaru beg to CONTRADICT the ADVERTISEMENT of Mr O’Dowd appearing in last night’s •* South Canterbury Times ” re Signing his Name to the List. We held a Meeting last Saturday, when all theßakera signed the paper (Mr O’Dowd included;, with the exception of Mr Douglas, who was absent. We beg to state MR O’DOWD WAS THE MAN WHO TOOK IT to Mr Douglas for his Signature. The reason Mr O’Dowd’s name did not appear in Monday’s issue was owing to the Secretary mislaying the List of Signatures, and having to copy the List from memory, overlooking Mr O’Dowd’s name until Tuesday, when it appeared. We also beg to state that Mr O’Dowd’s name was third on the Subscription List towards defraying the expenses of advertising. Just to show what kind of a man Mr O’Dowd is, wc also state that he offered us a Room on his Premises to save expense of holding Meetings in Hotels. Trusting the Public will appreciate the actions of Honorable men in preference to a Man who has proved himself to tell most infamous falsehoods, we conclude by stating that OUR PRICE WILL BE THE SAME AS USUAL.
