LOCAL INDUSTRIES.

JACKSON’S SAW-MILL. A town of the size and importance of Timaru should, one would think, be able to boast a complete saw-mill; and this desideratum Mr Jackson has supplied, in the premises lately taken over by him from Mr P. Clayton, in the Main South road. In this building, there are all the requisites for carrying on an extensive trade in timber, for building and other purposes. The principal object that attracts attention is the new planing machine imported by Mr Jackson at a cost of over £3OO from the factory _ of Messrs T. Robinson and Co., machinists, Rochdale. This wonderful machine, for it is really a marvel of mechanical ingenuity, operates upon flooring, skirting, and all sorts of boards, moulding or tonguing and-grooving them, from the smallest board up to pieces of wood 16in. broad by 6in. thick. The machine is supplied with adjustable planing irons, which can be set in order according to the work it is desired to perform. It will operate upon 33 feet of stuff per minute. There are besides turn-ing-lathes, circular saws, smaller planing machines, morticing, and saw-sharpen-ing machines, all connected with a neat little 10 horse engine. Every description of article is turned out, architraves, mouldings, skirtings, bosses, table and bedstead legs, window sashes, doors, and everything, in fact, in the way of woodwork. The mill employs a number of hands, and is a very complete and self-contained affair.
