DR MAGEE.

The “ Otago Daily Times’’ referring to this distinguished prelate, relates the following anecdote Having to preach before the Church Congress in Dublin in the early part of 1868 (the time when Mr Gladstone’s resolutions for the Disestablishmentjand Disendowment of the Irish Church Bill were before the House) he perceived Mr Disraeli with—if we remember right—the late Lord Derby in church, and choosing for his text, “ They beckoned for help to those on the other side,” he preached on the iniquity of disestablishing the Irish Church, a sermon which was afterwards republished, under the title of “ The Creaking Net.” Mr Disraeli was so impressed with the preacher’s eloquence that at the close of tho sermon he turned round to Lord Derby and said, “We must have that man in the Upper House,” and accordingly he was appointed to the important see of Peterborough, vacated by the death of Dr Jeune in the autumn. It has been stated that he is the only T, 0. D. man ever appointed to an English see.
