Telegrams are to hand from Malta and Trieste reporting that a severe earthquake has been felt at those places to-day. PeaceEvening. Intelligence received from Valparaiso states that a final treaty of peace has been signed between Chilli and Pern, and that the Chilians are preparing to evacuate Lima and Callao. The Bishop of Peterborough* Dr McGee, Bishop of Peterboro, who has been in a precarious state of healtli for some time past, has suffered a relapse, and much anxiety is felt as to his recovery. New Guinea. Oct. 25. Earl Derby, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, writing to the promoters of a Company which is being formed for the colonisation of New Guinea, states that the Government cannot permit the Company to carry on its projected operations, and that if the latter are attempted, the Governor of Fiji and the Commodore of the Australian Station will be called upon to interfere and protect the natives. France and ChinaHong Kong, Oct. 22. The latest intelligence from Tonquin states that the Anamite position at JBao Ninh has been fortified with Krupp guns, and the French troops have consequently deferred their projected attack on that place. Telegrams are also to band stating that Haiphong is threatened with an attach by a band of pirates numbering fully a thousand men. NihilistsSt. Petersburg, Oct. 23. Several arrests of Nihilists in the ranks of the Russian Army in the Caucasus have been effected, and a Commission has been appointed to examine the state of the troops in that district. Expected Assassination. Ottawa (Canada), Oct. 22. Considerable alarm prevails at Quebec in consequence of fears that an attempt will be made on the life of the Marquis of Landsdowne, the new GovernorGeneral. False Alann* Oct. 25. The Marquis of Landsdowne arrived at Quebec to-day, and was received with great enthusiasm. There was no foundation for the fears entertained that an attempt would be made on the life of His Excellency.
Cholera. Alexandria, Oct. 25. The fresh outbreak of cholera in this city is causing great alarm. Several Europeans hare been attacked, and tbo epidemic is increasing daily, CetewayoNatal, Oct. 25, Cetewayo is now the guest of Mr Osborne, the British Evident in Zulu, land, and is not coming, as was expected, to this colony.
