SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

A most painful accident occurred on board the ship Margaret Galbraith, about a quarter to 4 o’clock this afternoon, to Mr John Robertson, chief officer of the Galbraith, which is loading in the roadstead. Mr Robertson was standing on the rail, superintending the slinging of sacks of wheat from a lighter lying alongside, when the sling suddenly swung round, and knocked him over the side into the surf boat. He fell on the thwarts of the boat and broke his leg badly. Every bone was completely broken, and tlm parts were held together merely by a piece of flesh. The fracture is about half way between the knee and the ancle. With the utmost promptitude, a ship’s boat was lowered and the injured man taken ashore with all possible care. On arrival at the wharf the party were met by Dr Macintyre who ordered his removal to his own residence, whither he was immediately conveyed in an express, on a stretcher. The injnred man is about 36 years of age. Captain Ferguson, who was on board another vessel at the time, was brought ashore in the Titan.
