(Per Press Association.) TBIS DAY. Sympathising with SmugglersPalmeeston Nobth, April 9. Jessop and Peck have determined not to pay the fines in the illicit' still cases, to prevent (he police receiving a reward. On leaving Palmerston for Wanganui they were cheered by a number of sympathisers, prominent among whom were several of the witnesses for the Crown. It is the intention of those implicated to give Peck and Jessop the amount of the fine on their coming out of gaol. Not a Walk OverWellington, April 9. Christchurch, April 9, This morning three cottages were burned at Phillipstowp. Two, of four rooms each, belonged to Alonzo Kingsbeer, a carpenter, who lived in one, the other being empty. They were insured in the South British office for £125 each. The third house, the property of J. A. Willey, a coach trimmer, was unoccupied,, and insured in the Union office for £2OO. Kingsbeer’s furniture wus insured in the Victoria office for £2OO. Very little furniture was saved. The fire was causod by sparks from tho kitchen grate catching a newspaper on a chair in front.
