CARICATURES.

The Melbourne “Argus” writes: — “We have received some clever caricatures from pen-and-ink sketches by Mr M. C, B. Maasie illustrating the fortunes of the Hon,, Ivo. Bligh’s team in their struggles for the “ ashes of English cricket.” The sketches form a series, beginning: with the dismal collapse of the Australians in Melbourne last January, and the procession of batsmen from the wickets to the pavillion, and the still more complete breakdown of the team in Sydney. Then we have the British lion going at a cheerful gallop, whirling a funeral car hearing the ashes past a sign post pointing ‘To England.' The British lion triumphant is the subject of one or two very spirited sketches. In one he offers * another chance,’ though the ship is at the wharf, and the cricketing paraphernalia are in a corded box ‘ not wanted on the voyage.’ In another the lion, still triumphant, but wary, faces the kangaroo again. Then comes the best sketch of the series, the kangaroo executing a somersault in the exuberance of his joy over the victory of February, while other kangaroos are playing leapfrog and dancing jigs in the background, and the British lion creeps with tail between his legs, to the harbor where the ship awaits him. Altogether these sketches embody very successfully in pictorial form the light banter which passed between the partisans on either side during the series of matches which has just dosed, and will serve admirably to remind cricketers and cricket-lovers of the pleasant excitement of the time.’
