ASSESSMENT COURT.

TIMARU—THIS DAY.

(Before J. Beswick, Esq., Judge.)

The Court sat at 11 o’clock this morning for the purpose of hearing objections to valuations in the Borough of Timaru. Mr E. H. Lough, as Borough valuator, attended on behalf of the Borough Council.

The following objections were heard : Mr John Bligh objected to the valuation of his property in North Road at £l4°. n n The valuation was reduced to £llO. Mr W. Evans objected re section 105, that his tenancy had expired and claimed to have his name struck off the rate roll as occupier. The objection was allowed. Mr Henry Ford objected to the valuation of his offices in Strathallan street at £75, on the ground that he was only a monthly tenant. He also objected to the valuation of his stores and yard in Strathallan and Beswick streets at £IOSO.

Both objections were allowed. Mr J. B. Fussell objected to tbe valuation of his house and section, Nos. 247, 248, 249, 250, at £7O, the rateable value being less by £lO, than that sum. The objection was disallowed. Mr David Pyfe’s objection re his property in Edward street was not considered, it being informal. Mr Anthony Mills’ objection to the valuation of his shop in Great North Road, on the ground that he was a weekly tenant, was allowed. Mr F. B. Raymond’s objection to the value of his house in King street and store in Great South Road, at £35 and £52 respectively, on the ground that Mr Stone owned the house, and Mr Noble occupied the store, was allowed. Mr R. H. Rhodes objected to the following valuations :—Sec. 426, Rhodes town, £l2 10s ; sec. 438, Rhodestown, £l2 10s; sec. 64, Government town, £l2 10s ; sec. 255, Government town, £ls ; sec. 105, Government town, £75 ; on the following grounds, viz.—Sec. 426 is let to J. O’Connor ; sec. 438 is sold ; secar 64, 255, 105, never belonged to him.

He also objected to the valuation of sections 420, 421, 422, 423, 424, 425, 427, 437, 439, 440, 441, 442, 443, in Rhodes’ town at £l2 10s each ; of sections 67, 72, 220, 221, 225, in Government town at £l2 10s each ; and of sections 380, 381,397, Government town at £ls, on the ground that the rateable value of such properties was fully £IOO less than stated.

The following concessions were granted in answer to Mr Rhodes’ objections :—The valuation of sections 420 to 443, Rhodes’ town, was reduced to £lO each ; the same was done in the case of sections 67 to 225,Government town; the sections in Government town, assessed at £ls, were reduced to £l2 10s each. In the case of the second set of objections on the ground that the properties had been disposed of, the roll was ordered to be amended and the properties assessed to the new owners.
