The second meeting of the South Canterbury Hnnt Club was held on, the racecourse at the Washdyke 'to-day. The races were' open to the members of Sooth Canterbury Harrier Club and the Geraldine Beagle Club, and the meeting was intended as a wind-up of the present hunting season. The day was beautifully fine, and the attendance was much larger than was expected, seeing that the contests were only open to the members of the two Chibs referred; to. The course had been placed at the disposal of the Club, by the South Canterbury Jockey Club and the arrangements were' perfect. The course was the same sas that used for the Club’s own steeplechases, and, with the exception of the removal of one, double jump—the terror of steeplechase aspirants—and the reduc- ‘ tion of two fences by the removal of the top rail, the fences were the same. Messrs *Hobbs and Goodwin had a ' totalisator on the lawn, but they, did not do much business. Special train arrangements had been made by the Bailway Department, and, as usual, the District stationroaster (Mr Jones) gave every attention to the requirements of the travelling public. Altogether the meeting was a most enjoyable one, and the Hunt Club received sufficient encouragement to justify them in con tinning their meetings _ yearly. The cups run for were exhibited in the Secretary’s room, and they were very handsome and certainly worth risking a spill to win them. The following is details of the racing : Handicap Hunt Club Cup, /value 20 sovs. Distance about 3 miles. Mr T, E. ArmitagpV ch g Don , ' (late Tommy), aged, 12st 71bs (Mr J. H. R. King) , 1 Mr C. A. Coming past the stand the second time, Don and Warlock ran inclose company and jumped well. Getting over in*o the paddocks across the road, Mr Jefferson put Leap year on his mettle and closed np taking-'second place. It was then considered that the'race was a foregone conclusion for Leap Year t who was excellently ridden. Mr King, however, was not to, be done, and, although he did not ride in very artistic form, he kept his horse at it and managed to hold the lead till the second jump from home, which was cleared by Don and Leap Year in company. The former, who started in excellent trim and showed signs of excellent training, held his own excellently, and had the lead at the last jump. Every nerve was strained down the straight, and both horses showerf a good turn of speed, but Don was not to be denied, and he won an excellently contested race by a clear length.
