IT’S GOOD TO BE A POLICEMAN.
A policeman is, after all, the only man who can really elope with the lady of his heart with impunity. A touching story comes from Baltimore, where a member of the ‘ force named Wat Ens became enamoured of a lassie named Mary Froner. The old man was obdurate and would not consent, ao Mary and her lover hied themselves to a neighboring divine and the twain became one. The irate parent, who probably believed in the doctrine that, taking one consideration with another, a policeman’s lot is not a happy one, met the couple on the road and tried to force his daughter to return, at the same time abusing his son.in-law violently. The now member of the family at once arrestedbim and dutifully took biro to the Station House to answer charges of vulgar language, resisting an officer, and assault; It is not stated that be clubbed him or handcuffed ,him, but there is a beautiful moral hanging round this episode somewhere which may induce many a love-sickswain who has been kicked out by a prospective fater-in.law.to join the force and follow Mr Watkin’s example. Mr W. ia » happy roan, for every time his wife a relatives intrude on his Lares and Penates he can at once look them up for diaturbing the peace.
