MAGISTERIAL.
TIMARU—THIS DAY. (Before E. Beetham, Esq., E.M.,) Charles Kotepahi, a Maori, who had been remanded for the purpose of obtaining an interperter, confessed, after evidence had been taken in the case, that he had stolen a watch and chain from a person named Cox at Temuka on Dec. 9, and watf sentenced to 12 months’ hard labor. --The Eev. G. P. Mutu, Lyttelton, was present and acted as interpreter. r ' Alexander Bell, charged with failing to support, his wife and : children, was ordered to pay £1 a week, and tho case being a bad one, to go to gaol for three months, he 1 having broken a previous agreement. Isaac Curtis was charged on remand with stealing two bags of wool, the property of W.J.,Newton, and Georgo Smitten was now charged with complicity in tho theft, and further ; with stealing a bag of barley the property of Newton, valued* at 7s 6d. The last charge was first heard, and accused was Ordered to pay the value of the grain. In thewool case the evidence showed a plan to rob Newton, and both accused were sentenced to six months hard labor. The* prosecutor*gave Smitten a good character, bnt he gave way to drink.
