THE PREMIER OF NEW SOUTH WALES.

The following tribute to the statesmanship of Sir Henry Parkes is frorr-the evening issue, of the leading journal in Victoria :• —“ By tbenext mail ISir Henry Parkes proceeds to Great Britain for rest and for change of scene. As the leading statesman of Australia, the lion, ■gentleman'is sure'of a warm welcome in the mother country. The title just given him he can fairly claim, for no Minister elsewhere has had the success of Sir Henry Parkes. He is popular with the people, with whom he is as one on the great; questions; of the day. They know thaftiomno more earnestly desires their welfare' than himself. And’he has won the confidence of the propertied classes, inasmuch as;he has always held fhe doctrine that a colony should welcome'capital, and not terrify it and drive it‘*away, for the simple reason that the more employers'there'are the bettef it is for the working man. Practically, opposition to his rule has died out, and the land has had peace in his time, with the result..that while t we'; were, quarrelling amongst ourselves Sydney has enjoyed a prosperity unknown' before. It is mainly due to Sir Henry Parkes that no war of tariffs has taken place on this continent. When the Victorian Government imposed 'a tax on Sydney sheep and cattle, it was possible for The 'Government' of New 1 'Smith Wales to have imposed a charge on coal imported to Yictoria—which coal we want as cheaply as possible—and ill-feeling and bitterness would have,at once ensued. Sir Henry Parkes resisted this as well as other fiscal temp : : tations. Congratulations are . rightly Jbestowed upon the man under whom a signal success has been achieved, and, ! no doubt, just as Sir Henry Parkes is believedin his own country, so will he be 'honoured'in Great Britain." The ' great Yictorian want is a statesman ,of his calibre, who would reconcile parties, insure a continuance' of peace, and give a guarantee of progress.”
