His Excellency the Governor left Christchurch for 'Wellington last evening. About 5000 people attended the Caledonian gathering at Christchurch yesterday. Murdo Elder bore away the palm for piping. He was in a surf boat alongside the City of Cashmere, and was stooping in the act of stowing a bale of corn sacks in the boat, when the stevedore on board lowered another bale on' top of him, jamming bis breast on the one ho was leaning over. These bales weigh about seven hundredweight, so that the strain his chest was subjected,, to was considerable. He was brought ashore and taken to the Hospital, but up to the time of our going to press we could not learn the exact extent of the unfortunate man’s injuries.
