ARCTIC EXPLORATION.
[By Cable to Sydney,] London, Dec. 21. Tho Governor of Eastern Siberia reports that the schooner Jeannette, which was fittol out for Arctic exploration purposes by Mr James Gordon Bennott, of the “ New York Herald,” and which was generally believed to have perished, has been discovered safe. Dec. 22. Further intelligence has been received in reference to tho recovery of the tebooner Jeannette. The schooner reached the higher latitudes in the Arctic Ocean in June last, and then became blocked in with ice and so crushed that she had to be abandoned. Some of the crew perished from cold and hunger, the survivors took to the boats, and after many privations, being almost famished, reached the great Siberian river, Lena, which flows into the Arctic Ocean. This river they navigated in their boats, and having been hospitably treated by the natives, reached the city of Irkutsk in Asiatic Russia. It is from this city that the telegraphic news'of their safety has been despatched. The news created great excitement in America.
