INSPECTION OF MILK AND DAIRIES.
An Act passed last session to amend the Public Health Act of 1876 gives the Governor power himsfelt to make, and to authorise Local Boards of Health subject to conditions, to make regulations for the following purposes : For the registration with the Local Board of all persons carrying on the trade of cowkeepers, dairymen, or purveyors of milk. For the appointment of Inspectors of Milk and of Dairies.
For the inspection of cattle in dairies and for prescribing and regulating the lighting, ventilation, cleansing, drainage, and water-supply of dairies and cowsheds and yards in the occupation of persons following the trade of cowkeepers or dairymen, or used by them in connection with such occupation. For securing the cleanliness of milk stores, milkshops, and of milk vessels used for containing milk for sale by such persons. For prescribing precautions to be taken for protecting milk against infection or contamination, and for prohibiting the sale of milk in cases where the public health would be likely to be endangered by such sale.
A “ Gazette” of Dec. 22, contains an Order in Council authorising any Local Board of Health to make regulations for the above purposes, subject to the following conditions : No one but a duly-qualified medical practitioner shall be appointed as an Inspector of Milk or Dairies. None of such regulations shall enable the sale of milk to be prohibited unless the Inspector of Milk or Dairies, or some other duly-qualified medical practitioner, shall certify that the use of the milk, the sale of which is proposed to be prohibited, is likely to endanger the public health. That any such regulation so made may be repealed at any time by the Governor in Council.
