WAIMATE RACES.

The Waimato New Year’s day racemeeting was held in the paddock kindly lent by MrStudholme. The day was everything that could bo desired but the course was exceedingly heavy owing to the recent rains. There were from 700 to 800 present and the Brass Band was in attendance. Mr Studhome officiated as judge. The following were the events: —

Handicap Hurdle Eace, of 30 sovs ; distance 2 miles ; over 8 flights of hurdles. Mr H. Bradley’s Milo - (owner) 1 Mr P. Buttler’s Tc AVhetumsirama (O’Connor) 2

Mr D. O’Brien’s Little John (Armstrong) 3

Time—smin. 3secs. Five started.

The horses started well together until the iirst hurdle was reached, when Thilo’s rider fell and gave up the race. All the others kept well together but Milo had slightly the best of it. This position he maintained throughout winning by about three lengths. Hack Huiidlk Back, of 10 so vs ; once round the course ; open to all horses not winners of 15 so vs public stakes; to carry riot less than I'Ost 71b. Mr C. 2 miles. Mr P. Butler’s Numa - (O’Connor) 1 Mr J. Foster’s Wainono (M. Allan) 2 Mr J. Foster’s Hindoo - (Hoskins) 3 Vampire, Soukar, Blue Peter, and Little John were scratched.

Hindoo and Wainono took up the running, with Numa in the rear. Passing the judge’s box, on the lirst round, Wainono led by about three lengths, with Hindoo second, and Numa third. This position was kept until the top of the course was reached. On coming towards the straight Numa shot past Hindoo, and drew up upon Wainono, and a good race ensued. Numa proving too good for the local horse, passed the box. two lengths in front. Time—4 min 15 sec.

Walmatk County Pursk of. 200 sovs, for horses the bona fide property for six months prior to date of entry of residents of the Waimate county only. Distance, 1 mile; welter weight for age ; any horse having Avon any public money to carry 1 st penalty. Mr J. Foster’s Wainono (Sinpson) 1 Mr C. W. Bourne’s Seven Bells

(Owner) 3 Eight started. This was a good race. Time—2 min 15 sec, Puulicans’ Handicap of £4O. Distance, 14 miles. Mr A. J. Keith’s Soukar - (Cotton) 1 Mr A. McKay’s Blue Peter (M. Allen) 2 Mr J. G. Ilichmond’s Thilo (Cornelius) 3 Four started. Numa, Vampire, Milo, Little John, and Hindoo were scratched. Soukar won easily. Time—3 min 18 sec. A protest was lodged by Allan and McKay, the jockey anti owner of Blue Peter against Soukar for jostling which was disallowed Hack Pace of lOsovs ; for all horses that have not won public money exceeding £lO catch weights ; half mile heats, post entry. This had the appearance of being the finest race of the day until Hindoo fell and rolled over his rfder (Mr Allan) and all interest in the race was then lost every person making their Avay as quickly as possible to see what had happened. The lad after being examined bv Dr Hoadlay Avas found to he suffering from concussion of the brain and he is very badly braised. He was 'carried to Mr Sherwin’s hotel in a cab where he still lies unconcious, but hopes are entertained of his recovery. The horse is so badly hurt that it will have to be destroyed.
