A HOAX.

Somethin# very much resembling a cruel hoax was perpetrated to-day. In our morning contemporary the following advertisement appeared;—“All persons willing to, take part in the Protestant procession to take place to-day will ]dease meet at the Town Hall this day at twelve o’clock, when they will he supplied with colors free. Hod save the Queen.” At noon a crowd of two or three hundred pnrsons, including a few women and several special constables, assembled at the Town Hall to witness the display. Instead of a procession they found the following notices posted up on either side of the main entrance:-—“Notice. All Her Majesty’s peaceful subjects arc requested not to assemble themselves for procession to-day, as the advertisement was unauthorised ,by any section of the community. J. H. Sutter, Mayor.” “ L.0.L., No. H 5. Loyal Orangemen of Timaru. Brethren —A resolution of the lodge declares we shall not walk. I therefore call upon all the brethren to keep clear of the procession to-day as Orangemen, and give no cause for offence. A. Mills, W.M.” A few of those assembled wore marigolds in their coat button holes, but otherwise there was do display of party colors. About an hour after the time advertised, five individuals presented an appearance, wearing the Orange regalia, and marched from the Town Hall down the main street, as far as the co-operative store, where they broke up, being apparently satisfied with having sported their colors unmolested.
