WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above body was held at the Council Chambers on Tuesday Dec 30, instead of Wednesday as usual in consequence of that day being the last of the year, and to enable monies to be paid previous to the New Year holidays. Present —Messrs Moody (in the chair) J. Bruce, N. O’Briau, J. Manchester, Hayes, Louden, Studholme, and McGregor. In compliance with the award of the Auditor-General, it was resolved that the sum of £l9ll 3s od be paid to the Borough, and the necessary (steps for transferring reserves awarded be taken at once.

A letter was read from the Borough Council asking that the Engineer be allowed to give the clerk such information as he may require in connection with quantities of metal and particulars of specifications of road work, same not encroaching on his other duties. It was resolved to comply. A letter was read from the Timaru High School Board asking this Council to appoint a member to represent the county on that Board. Mr James Bruce was eleeted to the Board.

An application from McLaren and Bruce for refund of £52 rates was declined.

Mr .Manchester gave notice of motion that the resolution to sell the section applied for by (Mr Bryson he rescinded. A letter from H. Squire requesting the road at Pareora to bo repaired, was referred to the engineer. A memorial from residents of Makikihi requesting Swamp road to be formed, was also referred to the engineer. It was resolved—“ That Messrs White and Jameson be asked to explain what the real cause of delay has been in retaining Loudon’s deeds for such a length of time, and whether such a state of matters cannot be remedied, and that the Chairman see to having the matter expedited ; and that Messrs Loudon, Bros, be informed that the Council regrets the delay, and will do what it can to hurry on the matter.” A committee consistingof Messrs Manchester Louden and Hayes were appinted to inspect and report re Mr E. Tcschcmakers application to have roads formed in Woolshed gully. The following accounts were passed : general account, £1725 16s Id ; charitable aid, £ll6 2s lid. Total, £lßll I9s.

Proposed by Mr McGregor, and seconded by Mr Bruce.—“ That the sum of £2OO be passed on account of upper Waikato bridge.” Carried.

A committee consisting of Messrs Studholme Hayes and Manchester,were appointed to accept the tenders for repairs to roads suggested in the Engineers report : item District Hoads.

Pratt, £l7O 7s 6d : No. 332, J. W. Black, £276 3s ; No. 333, S. Ding, £4l 10s. The following resolutions were carried : “ That the road on the Waiho Flat, near the railway station, through McLean’s land, be formed and metalled without delay, and the roads in that locality be put into a state of thorough repair ; the road at Waiho railway station to be fenced by the Council.”

“ That the plans of the Borough of Waimate be all handed over to the Corporation, in accordance with the request sent in by the Town Clerk ; also all papers in connection therewith relating to lands and works within the boundaries of the borough.” The report of the Committee rc the Engineer’s charges against J. Callanan, contractor, was received, and the charges upheld. The Chairman and Messrs Bruce and and Stndholme were appointed a deputation from the Council to wait upon the Municipal Corporation of Waimate, with a view of organising a local Committee who will take the complete control of working and providing funds for the future working of the hospital and administering charitable aid within the County. It was decided to call for tenders for bridge at McCulloch’s crossing in accordance with amended plans submitted. Proposed by Air McGregor, and seconded by Mr Moody—“ That fresh tenders be called for contracts Nos. 324 and 320.”

An amendment was proposed by Mr O’Erian and seconded by Mr Hayes— That Callanan be allowed to complete contracts 821 and 324, and that fresh tenders be called for No 420.

A very lengthy discussion took place upon the conduct of the contractor referred to, and ultimately upon the motion and amendment being put the amendment was declared carried. It was resolved that the Council hold its ordinary monthly meeting on the last Wednesday in each month, at 2.30 p.m. The Council then adjourned.
