OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. DEAFNESS AND DLINDNKSS. The shill of Dr Wallcnhurg as an oculist has just been exhibited in a most satisfac. torv manner by his successful treatment of vrhat was perhaps one of the most difficult eases which he has dealt with since his ariival in Tnveieargill. Eight or nine days ago a Jitlie girl, whoso parents reside at 'WinLon. was brought to town by a relative, in the hope that relief might be. afforded. The child, who had been under medical treatment, hut without improvement, for about ten weeks previously, was found to be suffering from acute inllammation of the l ight or e. The sight seemed to be compfetelv lost, and the doctor was at first doubtful as to whether ho would be justified in hiking the ease in hand, but he finally decided to do so, and his efforts have resulted most happily, the little patient being now able to use the injured eye with as Hindi freedom as the other, and her relative, from whom the loregoing particulars were obtained, was to-day informed that she. might bo taken home to her parents, —” (Southland Daily News,” Dee. 2, is?; i. The Eye and Ear.—Professor Wallonhurg is effecting some marvel lons cures in eases of blindness and deafness. At his invitation we visited the consulting rooms at the Albion Hotel, yesterday morning, when we conversed with two or throe out of a total of about th'nty patients present. The first east' biought under notice was that of ■lames Roheitson, of Morton Mains, who was suffering from heavy films in both eyes. He assured us that for the past six years he had suffered acutely, and during four years of that period he had been under medical treatment without receiving any benefit—-in fact he wont from had to worse. Placing himself under Professor Wallcnlmrg's treatment he sptcdily came round, and yesterday could distinctly' see a hair at the ordinary reading distance Richard Atkinson, of Invt reargill, who had been treated in Dimedm°nnd Melbourne for impaired eyesight. also bore testimony to the Professor’s skill.' He had been totally blind of one eye, the other being considerably affected, hut could now distinguish the time on a clock a couple of chams off. Mrs V . Jerrett, of Riverton, was the next patient introduced. She stated that she had been suffering from deafness for the last six years, and during (hat lime her husband bad expended somelike PI 00 in endeavoring to effect a cure. Endev Professor V allonburg’s treatment slw bad so tar recovered her hearing that she could without dil'iicnlty hear a watch ticking. H. X. Bates was the next patient consulted; lie had been totally deaf of one car for foiuteeu r ears, the deafness arising from an attack of scarlet fever. In England bis ease was regarded as a hopeless one, and this was the iimic serious since the remaining cur was commencing to sympathise with the aI Vi eted one. He had only deen under tlie Professor's treatment a few days, and could now hear perfectly well. Constable Buchanan also states that the oeeulhi has succeeded in curing him of partial deafness. These are a few patients indiscriminately singled out from the patients in the consulting room, and they certainly go to show that the Professor is thoroughly up to Ins business. At present he has 75 patients under treatment. We would strongly urge all who aie afflicted with blindness or deafness to pay this oculist a visit, and at oner, .since bis stay here is limited. — “ Southland Times,” Nov. 25, 18711. The “ Evening Tribune " of October 18, says ;—Professor AVallenbuvg and Hr Grant have again eifeeted some more marvellous cures in blindness. The editor of this journal, accompanied hy Air J. J. Connor, visited the oculists'consulting rooms at the Criterion Hotel this morning. The first persMii the editor conversed with was Daniel Mahoney, a laborer residing at Logan's Point, who stated that ho had been totally blind for some two weeks, through a severe cold he had contracted. He hud been under private treatment for a week, but he got worse instead of better. He was brought to Professor Wallcnhurgon the lull instant, and since then lie has been under this clever oculist's treatment, with the result that ho is now recovering the sight of liolb. eyes. .John Chalmers, a biii-kmakcT. residing at Peliehet Bay, slated that he had been blind of the right eye for over nine weeks, and the left one was beginning to become altectcd hy the light one. lie was under treatment at the hospital, luit without any beneficial result. He has been under Professor 'Wallenhurg’s tieatmcnt three weeks, and can now discern the smallest object with both eyes. Patrick Connor, a miner residing at Hindon was tin: next patient consulted. He had been totally blind of the light eye for three months and had been in the hospital under lieatment, which, ho states, tended in make the light worse, and to injure the left one. He went under Professor Wallenburg's treatment on the Dth October, and now he is perfectly cured, and intends starting to follow lii.s calling on Monday next. The cases that arc instanced above arc ones in which the patients went to the oculists entirely destitute of funds, and were treated out of simple humanity and charity ; conseijuensly Professor Wallenburg and Hr Grant arc deserving of the thanks of the community for the kindness and charity displayed in these cases.
