CRICKET.

Timaru Press v. Washdyke. This match took place on Saturday afternoon at the Washdyke, resulting in a victory for the former club. Play commenced about 2 p.m. by the Press team going first to the wicket, who sent in Messrs Collins and Hardcastle, and they made a good stand, scoring a total of 35 between them. The latter’s innings must be considered a rather lucky one, on account of several chances being missed in the fielding. Terawhiti, who played as a substitute, was not so lucky, being caught by Studart after scoring 5; he, however, is a good all round cricketer, having played in Oamaru for his club very successfully. Knight made the top score, 19, playing very carefully for his total, in fact the success of the Press team must be attributed to the tour players already mentioned, as the others scored only six between them, the rest being made up with byes. The fielding on both sides was very indifferent, especially on the part of Nicholls for the Press team, who seems entirely lost in a cricket field.
