HOTEL NEWS.

The opening up of respectable hotels and the closing of low publichouses is one of the surest checks to the spread of drunkenness. Landlords of respectable houses have a position to maintain, and consequently are more particular as to the manner in which they conduct their business. Several fine hotels have been erected in Dunedin during the last few months, and one of the finest of these is the Brittania Hotel in Rattray-street. Mr Samuel Porter, the landlord, must be complimented on the taste displayed by him in the erection of such a structure. The bed, dining, and sitting rooms of this house are built on the most approved plans, and the bar and cellar are capitally arranged. Mr J. Baxter, a gentleman well-known and much respected, has taken the Pier Hotel, lately in the possession of Mrs Bennett. The . Pier is a house that has always done a respectable trade, and under the management of Mr Baxter, we feel assured it will continue to retatn its established good name.

He gives examples of Goethe, Schiller, Luther* Novalis, &c.
