SOLUTION TO PROBLEM 6, White. Black. 1. Rto Q B 6 *: 1. Any move. 2. R B or Kt mates

PROBLEM No. 8,

BLACK.

WHITE,

White to play and mate in three moves.

As the match between the Cities of Auckland and Dunedin comes off immediately after the cable is repaired, we give this week one of the games played at the Annual Congress of the Counties Chess Association, which will help our New Zealand players to form an opinion as to the respective merits of those engaged in the forthcoming match, and those who took part in the recent Congress in Glasgow: — White (Mr. Andrews) Black (Mr. Fisher) 1 P to K 4 1 P to K 3 2Ktto QB 3 (a) 2Pto Q 4 3 P takes P 3 P takes P 4 P to Q 4 4 K Kt to B 3 5 K Kt to B 3 5 B to Q 3 GBtoK Kt 5 6Bto KB 4 (b) 7 Kt takes P 7 B takes R P BKt takes Kt (ch) 8 P takes Kt 9 B takes P 9 Q takes B 10 R takes B 10 Kt to B 3 11 Q to Q 2 11 Castles on Q side 12 Castles 12 B to Kt 5 13 R to R G 13 Q to Kt 2 14 P to B 3 14 B takes Kt 15 P takes B 15 Kt to K 2 16 B to Q 3 1G Kt to Kt 3 17 Q R to R sq 17 R to Q 3 18 QtoKt 5 ( c ) 18 Qto B 3 19 Q to Kt 4 (ch) ’j 19 K to Kt sq 20 R takes P " 20 RtoK sq 21 B takes Kt 21 P takes B 22 K R to R 6 22 P to Q R 3 23 R to Kt sq 23 R to Kt sq 24 P to K B 4 24 Q to B 2 25 KtoKt sq ( d) 25 Qtoß sq 2G Q to Kt 5 26 R to K B 3 27 R to Kt 4 27 R to. And Black announced mate in 4 moves

(a) P to Q 4 is the usual move, followed by Kt to Q B 3.

(b) This mistake should have cost Mr. Fisher the game. B to K 3 was the proper move.

(c) Threatening to win the Kt by pushing forward the Bishop Pawn. (d) White should have disregarded the counter-attack, and played P to B 5. (e) This counter-attack is easily repelled by White.

(f ) A grave blunder. KR to K 7 was the coup juste, and should have decided the game in White’s favor. Probably the check was overlooked by Mr. Andrews. ((j) Q to K 3 would still have left White a chance of drawing. ( It, ) Mr. Fisher has fought an uphill game with great patience, and now finishes it off very prettily.
